Let's play Samul-Nori with One instrument!
OneNori and TwoNori demonstrates innovative ways to implement computer music technology with Janggu (Korean traditional instrument) and helps to create new ways to generate sound and images using electronics technology such as Arduino and sensors to expand traditional music performances to be interactively performed within interactive installation setting.
Samul nori (사물놀이) is a genre of percussion music that originated in Korea. The word samul means "four objects", while nori means "play". Samul nori is performed with four traditional Korean musical instruments called pungmul. These are Kkwaenggwari (꽹과리), a small gong; Jing (징), a larger gong; Janggu (장구), an hourglass-shaped drum; and Buk(북), a barrel drum similar to the bass drum.
"장구하나로 사물연주 놀이를 해보면 어떨까?" 2013년,
시드니 음대에서 혼자 장구를 배우고 치는것에 대해 한계를 느낄때즈음 사물놀이가 제 눈에 들어왔습니다. 하지만 사물놀이 악기를 한번도 만져보지 못했던 저는 악기를 찾으러 다니기 시작했죠. 마침, 시드니 음대 악기창고에 사물놀이 악기가 있다는 소식을 접하고 바로 달려가 악기를 빌려 연주해보았습니다.
사물놀이. Four object. 네 가지 농악기가 모여 만드는 소리. "하지만 장구에 모든 사물악å기 소리가 나고 농악기가 상징하는 이미지가 화면에 나타나면 어떨까?" 라는 상상을 실현해보기로 합니다. 3개월동안 작업한 이 작품은 장구에 센서를 부착해 센서에 진동이 가했을때 특정한 소리와 이미지가 나타나는 컨셉을 가지고 있으며 "원노리"는 혼자서 "투노리" 두 명이 함께 한국 전통음악을 보고 느끼고 만들어가는 장구 엘렉트로-인터렉티브 인스톨레이션으로 발명했습니다.
